Theories form a central part of nursing care actions and activities geared toward improving patient outcomes. The implication is that a nurse professional needs to understand such theories since they are closely connected to the nursing process. One such theory is the system theory. While system theory and the nursing process are both key to improving patient care outcomes, they have various differences. Systems theory underlines that organizations are made up of systems and subsystems which determine an organization’s activities and processes (Roberts, 2019). The implication is that the output, throughput, and input factors all dynamically interact to determine how nurses perform as well as the outcomes of nursing care. On the other hand, the nursing process refers to the theory that emphasizes that the nursing process functions as a systematic guide to patient-centered care (Toney-Butler & Thayer, 2022). Therefore, the nursing process is usually carried out following five steps or processes, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Each phase has got activities that need to be performed for them to be successful.

The systems theory can be applied to the identified public health issue. It is important to develop a deeper understanding of the status of nutrition among the identified individuals and explore strategies that can be used for improvement. Therefore, it should be understood that the solution may lie in how well the community system and the organization system, and their subsystems operate. For example, in looking at the healthcare organization, it will be key to explore the coordination between the leadership, the nurses, and other healthcare professionals such as nutritionists and use effective ways of enhancing collaboration (Duffy, 2022). Such a step will be key in ensuring that an improvement program gets appropriate input to produce the needed output for better healthcare outcomes.

The practicum period offers a chance to interact with clients, junior professionals, senior professionals, and the preceptor. As such, it is an opportunity to learn several skills from different individuals and acquire appropriate knowledge relevant to nursing practice and knowledge that can be applied in various situations, such as those instances requiring problem-solving (Brommelsiek & Peterson, 2020). It was fulfilling watching my mentor show problem-solving skills in different situations. My mentor was involved with other individuals in the practicum settings; therefore, the mentor was always at hand to help sort out various situations which needed considerable attention.

One of the situations I observed my mentor show problem-solving skills was resolving a conflict between two colleagues. Even though the two colleagues were supposed to work together on a program regarding health promotion education, this was not always the case. However, for unknown reasons, these two seemed not to be getting along well. Therefore there was always tension whenever they were to perform the same task at the same time. One day, they started arguing with each; their voices were so loud and got almost everyone’s attention. As such, my mentor decided to help solve the conflict as appropriate. The mentor quickly rushed to the scene and managed to stop the argument, which was almost breaking into a fight. I also arrived since I was interested in knowing what was going on. The colleagues accused each other of sabotage, dishonesty, and snitching. I was impressed by how my mentor listened to each account and mediated so that the two could work together again and put the past conflicts and struggles behind them. This situation, alongside others, was key in helping me acquire more knowledge, especially around conflict resolution. Conflict resolution is key in healthcare settings since conflicts are bound to occur (Lahana et al.,2019). I also learned a lot about how to avoid potential conflicts.
