Using Conflict Positively to Promote Interdisciplinary Teamwork and Collaboration

 Conflict can be used positively in a healthcare organization to promote interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration. In particular, conflict can define and train various teamwork skills to the multidisciplinary team members. Effective teamwork in medical practice requires the interdisciplinary team members to have technical competencies and non-technical competencies. Technical competencies entail being conversant with various clinical procedures and skills, while nontechnical competencies involve social and cognitive skills. In most cases, conflicts arise among the team members due to the lack of nontechnical skills, knowledge, and attitudes required for effective care delivery and collaboration (Brinkmann, 2018). Therefore, team members should be equipped with these vital skills, including intentional listening, speaking up deliberately in situations where hierarchical norms are strong, and psychological safety is low, and translation of information received from highly specialized language disciplines.

These skills can be defined and trained through the TeamSTEPPS program, which is an effective training source. The TeamSTEPPS program is an evidence-based teamwork system to improve teamwork and communication skills among healthcare workers (Brinkmann, 2018). Approximately 1.5 million healthcare professionals have undergone this training to enhance their teamwork and communication skills (Rosen et al., 2018). The TeamSTEPPS program focuses on four important skills: leadership, communication, mutual support, and situation monitoring. These skills prevent conflict among team members during collaboration. The lack of TeamSTEPPS competency of mutual support is the primary cause of breakdown in collaboration and conflict among interdisciplinary team members. Team members tend to conflict due to a lack of understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other group members in care delivery. Therefore, educating team members about the role of each one of them will end conflict amongst themselves. Additionally, they will respect and give moral support to others in the future since they understand their roles.

Three Roles of Team Thinking from Bensimon and Neumann’s

According to Bensimon and Neumann’s team members have different roles to play during team thinking. This discussion will focus on the critical thinking role of the definer, analyst, and critic.

The definer is mandated to voice and create the team’s reality (Rubenfeld & Scheffer, 2015). He makes a clear image of the team and communicates it to other team members. In the nursing practice, this role is fulfilled by the nurse leader. The leader creates the team’s reality and transmits it to other members. The definer role is necessary for a smooth team thinking process since it defines all the team’s facts, including the task to be completed, and communicates them to the team members. Therefore, members are prepared for the work, which enhances the smooth team thinking process. The other team members perceive the definer’s role as crucial since it provides the foundation of the team thinking process.

The second team thinking role is the analyst who evaluates all parts of a particular issue (Rubenfeld & Scheffer, 2015). This role is performed by the clinical analyst in the nursing practice. The clinical analyst is assigned this role due to his clear understanding of the healthcare organization’s workflow; thereby, he relates day-to-day processes to the team thinking process. The analyst’s role is necessary for a smooth team thinking process since it reveals the healthcare organization’s daily functions and operations that team members should consider in the team thinking approach. Other team members perceive the analyst’s role as vital since it enables them to align their critical thinking process to their activities.

The third team thinking role is the critic, which involves redefining, reanalyzing, and reinterpreting a particular issue (Rubenfeld & Scheffer, 2015). This role is performed by nurse informatics in the nursing practice. The critic’s role is necessary for a smooth team thinking process since it redefines a particular issue that the team is supposed to handle. Therefore, the critic’s role enables the team members to make sound judgments to develop the best solutions for resolving the presented issue. Other team members perceive the critic’s role as vital since it redefines, reanalyzes, and reinterprets, thereby enabling them to handle the problem in the best way to come up with a solution.
