Topic 1 DQ 2

Before studying public health, I considered poverty a state where an individual lacks the financial resources to afford necessities like food, clothing, and decent shelter. Besides, I related poverty to a lack of money and living below a country’s poverty line. I thought poverty forces individuals to live in deprived living conditions that prevent them from securing stable jobs, acquiring quality education, affording medical care, and engaging in recreational activities because of the lack of money. Based on this definition, the focus of solutions to alleviate poverty would be to create jobs for individuals to get a source of income to afford food, healthcare, clothing, and decent shelter (Helminiak, 2020). Another solution would be to give food and clothing donations to the poor and the government to build standard houses for low-income individuals and families.

Relational poverty is being poor in community where one lacks a support system. I have realized that anybody can experience relational poverty, particularly as the world focuses more on digital communication than personal communication (Feldman, 2019). Spiritual poverty occurs when a person is rich in money and material possessions but lacks spiritual sensitivity (Helminiak, 2020). Concerning this, the focus of the poverty alleviation solutions would be modified to include a holistic approach by connecting individuals with social and spiritual support systems. This can help them connect with other individuals, make friends, and create a personal relationship with God, thus improving their social and spiritual wellbeing.

The Relational Poverty Network (RPN) is a program that incorporates the relational definition of poverty. RPN is an international, collaborative, and inclusive network that brings together an international community of teachers, scholars, policymakers, and activists (RPN, 2018). It has a website that assists individuals working on alleviating relational poverty to find one another, establish new collaborations, share research, and exchange learning resources.
