NURS 8002 MODULE 4 ASSIGNMENT: LOCATING AND CRITICALLY ANALYZING PRIMARY RESEARCH ARTICLES
The topic of interest for this assignment is family psychoeducation for patients with schizophrenia. Family psychoeducation is a psychotherapy intervention to delivering knowledge about schizophrenia and its management to patients and their family members. Besides, it fosters collaborative relationships between healthcare professionals and patients when working toward recovery (Lu et al., 2022). It is a learning process that fosters attitude, cognition, and behavior change. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and synthesize peer-reviewed articles related to the topic.
Conducting the literature search and the databases consulted
The literature search was conducted using the Walden Library. The key terms used in the search were “psychoeducation” and “schizophrenia”. After conducting the searches with these terms, I applied filters to identify articles that were primary research articles published from 2019 through June 2023. The databases consulted in the search include PubMed, Embase, CINAHL Complete, and PsycINFO.
Summary of Articles
Verma et al. (2019) examined the efficacy of family psychoeducation on the caregivers of schizophrenia patients about their perceived quality of life. The study employed a randomized control trial (RCT) whereby family psychoeducation intervention was provided twice monthly for 6 months to the caregivers in the experimental group. Study findings show that family psychoeducation led to a marked improvement in the overall quality of life scores of caregivers in the experimental group than those in the control group.
Sharma et al. (2021) sought to understand the role of family psychoeducation in the management of schizophrenia and the caregiver’s well-being. The study applied an RCT design with a sample of 40 caregivers and patients, 20 each placed randomly in the treatment group and the control group. The study findings revealed significant improvement in the emotional regulation of patients and caregivers in the treatment group. In addition, there was an improvement in caregivers’ psychological well-being and a significant improvement in schizophrenia symptoms of patients in the treatment group.
Tessier et al. (2023) conducted an RCT in a 12-month follow-up to assess the efficacy of a brief family psychoeducation program. This was with regards to decreasing relapse risk and improving medication adherence in patients, as well as decreasing caregiver burden and depression and increasing knowledge of the disease. The study found that the family psychoeducation intervention markedly decreased the risk of schizophrenia relapse among patients. For caregivers, the psychoeducation intervention reduced the burden, alleviated depression, and increased the knowledge of schizophrenia.
Synthesis of the Three Articles
The above articles applied an RCT design to assess the impact of family psychoeducation on caregivers and patients with schizophrenia. The articles establish that family psychoeducation is valuable in improving caregivers’ overall well-being and quality of life since it reduces disease burden and related depression. Besides, they confirm that the intervention improves patients’ emotional regulation and symptoms and prevents relapse. Thus, family psychoeducation can be incorporated into schizophrenia management to improve the outcomes for patients and their caregivers.
Differences between Summarizing and Synthesizing Research
Summarizing research entails sharing the key points from individual literature sources. On the other hand, a research synthesis involves combining information from multiple literature sources and includes one’s analysis of the literature. In summarizing each paragraph has one source and citation, while in synthesis, the paragraphs have multiple sources and citations in addition to one’s ideas and voice.
Conclusion
Family psychoeducation in schizophrenia was the topic of interest. Articles related to the topic were searched using PubMed, Embase, CINAHL Complete, and PsycINFO databases. The identified articles establish that family psychoeducation improves caregivers’ well-being and patients’ symptoms.
