The client is presented with a severe right-sided headache, which lasts for 2–3 days affecting her ability to concentrate at work. She rates her pain at the time of evaluation as 10/10 based on the pain rating scale. Additionally, the client complains of nausea and reports vomiting three times. She also reveals that the light hurts her eyes. The presented symptoms indicate that the patient has migraines, which is an inherited neurological condition. Migraines are associated with multiple symptoms but the most significant complaint is severe and throbbing head pain. Patients report other symptoms, including difficulty in speaking, numbness or tingling, and sensitivity to sound and light. According to Goadsby et al (2017), migraine is characterized by a wide range of symptoms, including unilateral attacks, throbbing and severe head pain, sensitivity to movement, auditory, and visual among other afferents inputs. Patients might report other symptoms, including tiredness, reduced concentration, irritability, and yawning. The symptoms occur during the premonitory phase before the head pain.
Ethnic Factors that might Affect Physiological Functioning
The patient’s physiological functioning is impacted by a wide range of racial factors. Based on this case study, racial factors significantly affect the prevalence and incidence of migraine headaches. Caucasian men reported a higher incidence of migraine headaches than Asian and African Americans in the United States. Additionally, a higher rate of migraine is reported among Blacks, Native Americans, Hispanics, or Asians than among the Whites in the US (Loder et al., 2016). Therefore, migraine is common among the minority groups than the whites in the U.S.
The Impact of Processes Interaction on the Patient
The interaction of neurological and musculoskeletal pathophysiologic processes significantly impact this patient. The two systems interact where the brain and nerves are responsible for skeletal (voluntary) muscles activation. The action of the muscle fibres depends on the message sent by the brain. In this case, the patient is diagnosed with migraine, a brain disorder that is attributed to various incidents that activate the trigeminocervical pain system inappropriately, thereby affecting the client’s ability to concentrate at work.
