Communication: Communication influences human interactions, behavior, and transmission of culture. Individuals use different verbal and non-verbal communication techniques based on their culture (Giger & Haddad, 2020). For example, maintaining eye contact in some contact is considered rude in some cultures while others consider it a symbol of attentiveness.

Space: This refers to the distance between individuals during an interaction. Cultures have space, which influences communication. The zones of interpersonal space include personal, intimate, consultative, public, and social. Each culture has its unique rules that govern personal distance (Durant, 2022; Giger & Haddad, 2020). For example, some cultures emphasize the importance of being cared for by a nurse of the same gender as the patient while others do not. Violation of such feelings or space affects the patient’s experiences with the care.

Social organization: Social organization refers to the structuring of cultures around family group (s). Factors such as religious values, beliefs, preferences, family structure, and organization determine a

community’s culture and ethnicity. Social organization affects health (Zarzycka et al., 2020). For example, a community affected by racism and stigmatization is likely to have negative experiences with healthcare and have poor health-seeking habits.

Time: Time affects interpersonal communication. Cultural groups are classified either as present, past, or future-oriented. The uptake of healthcare services such as preventive care requires future orientation (Durant, 2022). This is because future rewards drive actions that prevent diseases, injuries, or illnesses.

Environmental control: Human beings interact with their environment, including culture. They can control their interaction with their environment or let the environment control them (Rukadikar et al., 2022; Sánchez-Luque et al., 2022). For example, individuals can abandon cultural values, beliefs, and practices that predispose them to health problems.

Biological variations: individuals from different racial or ethnic groups have varying biological characteristics. Genetic differences affect health-related variables such as drug metabolism (Giger & Haddad, 2020). For example, individuals of Chinese background are highly sensitive to propranolol compared to American Whites.
