The competencies ensure that graduate nurses have knowledge, skills, and abilities for independent clinical practice. The purpose of this paper is to describe the NONPF competencies, a plan for social change, and legislative or advocacy activities in the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA).

Scientific Foundations
The PMHNP program has equipped me with key scientific knowledge in nursing, including theoretical, clinical, and research knowledge. As a result, I can translate this knowledge and demonstrate how it applies to nursing practice (Ljungbeck et al., 2021). I can also utilize the research knowledge to provide evidence on any emerging issue in nursing practice, thus providing solutions when there are stuck points in patient care.
Leadership
The leadership course and classes in my PMHNP program have equipped me with the necessary leadership skills crucial to my personal and professional growth. As a result, I have understood my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. In addition, I have gained skills that I can utilize to provide leadership in professional activities and influence a group (Schlunegger et al., 2023). I have also learned the importance of being a good role model and setting standards for professional behaviors to ensure effective mentorship and quality of work from my team. Quality
The program has also equipped me with the necessary knowledge of the importance of continuous quality improvement through quality assurance (QA) and total quality management (TQM). The two tools ensure I can continuously evaluate myself, my coworkers, and healthcare services (Chair et al., 2023). As a result, this allows me as a PMHNP to identify the quality of service I provide to patients while valuing their feedback. As a result, I can ensure continuous improvement in patient care by utilizing several tools such as Plan-Do-Study-Acts and Kaizen.
Practice Inquiry
The PMHNP program has equipped me with skills crucial in translating knowledge from clinical practice to improve patient outcomes. In addition, I can apply clinical investigative skills and identify practice problems to improve health outcomes (Schlunegger et al., 2023). I can also identify gaps in care that require improvement in patient management. I can also evaluate various care delivery models and treatments and help patients and healthcare institutions pick a cost-effective choice with investment returns.
Technology and Information Literacy
The program has enabled me to learn about the use of technology in medicine, an emerging issue in clinical practice and patient care. I have learned to use various technologies, including telemedicine and electronic medical records (EMR). EMRs have been essential in maintaining patient information in an accurate and updated manner in an electronic system (Stoumpos et al., 2023). As a result, it ensures effective patient diagnosis, reduction in medical errors, and provision of safer care. On the other hand, telemedicine allows healthcare providers to provide remote healthcare through videoconferencing, thus saving on costs and time.
Policy
The program has allowed me to appreciate the policies in place to ensure improved population health outcomes. As a result, I have learned the importance of advocacy in raising priority issues in certain population groups, such as minority groups. In addition, I have learned about the process involved in managing population health and disaster preparedness (Ljungbeck et al., 2021). I have also learned the value of stakeholder involvement, such as partnerships from communities, public health, industry, academia, health care, and local government, in achieving cost-effective health equity.
Health Delivery System
The PMHNP program has helped me understand how healthcare systems run, including the importance of incorporating cost-effective care and evidence-based practice. I have also learned the importance of participating in organizational strategic planning and initiatives that improve patient care (Schlunegger et al., 2023). As a result, I know how to effectively coordinate resources to provide safe, equitable, and quality care to all my patients and understand the factors affecting healthcare costs and reimbursement.
Ethics
The program has also equipped me with knowledge about medical ethics, such as autonomy, beneficence, maleficence, and justice while providing care to patients to ensure equitable and respectable patient care. In addition, the program has equipped me with skills crucial in ensuring nursing professionalism through setting and maintaining professional boundaries between myself and the patient (Schlunegger et al., 2023). It has also equipped me with the skills necessary to solve an ethical dilemma and provide solutions to unethical situations.
Independent Practice
Clinical and theoretical knowledge from the program has equipped me with the necessary skills crucial for my independent practice license. I can utilize knowledge taught from the basic sciences such as pathology, physiology, and advanced pharmacology to independently inform my practice (Ljungbeck et al., 2021). I can also diagnose, request laboratory or imaging tests, and provide appropriate treatment or follow-up to all my patients. The program also had classes on entrepreneurship that were crucial in helping me understand how to set up, market, and grow my business to potential clients.
Plan for Social Change
Social change allows healthcare providers to change their work approach to ensure their work can reach members of a community to have significant and long-term consequences. My plan as a PMHNP is to join volunteering programs in various communities. This will allow me to reach a larger population group. Examples of services I would provide while volunteering include educating communities on health and disease and the prevention and management of certain diseases. I would also offer psychological counseling to mental health patients and engage community health workers in ensuring patient support and continuity of care. While volunteering, I can identify health challenges affecting communities and raise them to various advocacy groups to ensure they are addressed. NRNP 6675 WEEK 10
Legislative or Advocacy Activities
The Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) has been key in promoting nurses and patient welfare in the 2023 and 2024 legislative agenda. One of the main agendas is protecting patient safety through various acts, including promoting patient safety and equitable access to care that limits the number of patients a nurse can care for at a given time (MNA, n.d.). Another act in the agenda includes mandatory overtime protections to prohibit hospitals from being given overtime in hospitals, thus reducing fatigue. In addition, the agenda advocates for safe medication administration and maintenance of independent authority over nursing licensure in the Commonwealth to ensure nurses in Massachusetts maintain local and independent control over their practice and licensing within the state.
Conclusion
NONPF competencies are crucial for graduate nurses’ personal and professional growth as they enhance their decision-making skills. NONPF can also encourage nurses to engage in community activities, such as volunteerism, to promote social change. The MSA legislative agenda is key in promoting patient and nurses’ welfare while providing or receiving care.
