Experiences with Healthcare Information Systems
Healthcare delivery has advanced in multiple dimensions in response to the ever-evolving patient needs. Healthcare information systems dominate this evolution to promote data-driven and technology-centered health practice (Farokhzadian et al., 2020). Outcomes and experiences vary with the type of information systems in a particular care setting and how nurses use them. Typically, health information systems improve data management and modernize health processes (Epizitone et al., 2023). Patients and care providers should embrace and use them effectively for high patient outcomes.
My experiences with patient portals underscore the significance of healthcare information systems in the advanced nursing practice. In nursing, patient portals provide an avenue for patient-provider interactions as nursing professionals use health data to assess patients, recommend treatments, and provide disease management support without the need for physical visits to healthcare facilities (Richwine et al., 2023). Transitioning from physical encounters with patients and families to patient portals is easy with the right skills, attitudes, and resources. My experience has been positive due to my knowledge of how patient portals work and using them in care settings with the appropriate technological infrastructure to support the successful integration of the relevant health information technology (IT) into patient care. However, as Chu et al. (2022) noted, continuous education for nurses and patients is crucial to prevent data-related risks when sharing and using health information in patient portals. Preventing these risks ensures that care facilities are free from ethical and legal issues associated with data breaches.
Medical record exposure has been integral in improving my knowledge of how healthcare information systems can be used to optimize patient outcomes. Electronic medical records facilitate timely care delivery by ensuring the readiness of crucial health information, including the patient’s history, test results, medications, and progress reports (Keshta & Odeh, 2021). The exposure has also enabled me to understand better the risks associated with electronic medical records and the need for security safeguards. Privacy, security, and confidentiality are the main issues that should be addressed in medical record systems to ensure safe and efficient use (Bani Issa et al., 2020; Keshta & Odeh, 2021). Above all, an interdisciplinary approach should be prioritized in healthcare to enable a secure and proficient exchange of health data within and outside the care facilities.
