Discussion Question

According to the CDC 2022 statistics, the top ten leading causes of mortality in AZ are heart disease, cancer, accidents, Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, diabetes, suicide, Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis, and hypertension. These diseases are attributed to lifestyle practices. Thus, poor lifestyle habits are risk factors for individuals residing in AZ. Given that the leading risk factors for heart disease are smoking, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity, which are modifiable, it is surprising that heart disease is the leading cause of death in Arizona with a mortality rate of 144.8  (CDC, 2022). For example, Arizona ranks 23rd across the U.S., with 23% of adults reporting current cigarette smoking. In addition, Arizona ranks 32nd across the U.S., with 22.6% of adults reporting no leisure time activity.

The contributing risk factors for heart disease in the area’s demographics are poor nutrition and stress. Poor nutrition is usually in the form of excessive calories and high consumption of foods high in fat and salt, which contribute to many major risk factors (Tsao et al., 2022). The rate of obesity in AZ has increased over the years. Obesity and overweight increase the risk of chronic health problems, including heart disease. Other chronic illnesses, like diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, and kidney disease, significantly impact the development and treatment of heart disease.

Health providers in AZ face various challenges with diagnosing and disease prevention. Many individuals face significant barriers in seeking healthcare, like physical distance from healthcare facilities and lack of transportation. This hinders them from accessing the necessary preventive care services. In addition, many AZ residents do not have access to the specialty care needed to treat their chronic illnesses limiting their diagnosis and treatment (Tsao et al., 2022). Lack of medical insurance also limits many AZ residents from accessing care, which creates a barrier to diagnosing and health prevention.
