Nursing Theory
[elementor-template id="165244"]Orem’s self-care model postulates that every person has self-care needs and has the right and ability to meet these needs themselves, except when their ability is compromised in some way. In Orem’s model, self-care requisites are universal. This is because they are common to all individuals and are associated with human functioning and life processes. The model outlines three self-care requisites: Universal, Developmental, and Health deviation. Universal requisites promote human functioning and development, whereas development requisites are associated with life changes in a person or life cycle (Gligor & Domnari, 2020). Health deviation requisites occur due to ill health and are needs that become obvious due to illness or disability.
Orem’s theory applies to my future nurse leader role because the goal of nursing is to meet the self-care needs of patients. Thus, as a nurse leader, I will be responsible for ensuring that the nursing team helps patients meet these needs. The theory has helped me understand that individuals usually require nursing when they or their significant others cannot cope with self-care deficits caused by health-related problems. As a nurse leader, I should lead nurses in helping individuals and families to take the initiative and responsibility and to develop their potential in matters concerning their health (Yip, 2021).
When discussing self-care with the nursing team, we will need to bear in mind that individuals, healthy and ill, are demanding to be given increased control of their health care. Consequently, we will be required to actively engage them in the decision-making process so that they can identify their self-care needs, establish their learning goals, and evaluate their self-care behavior (Yip, 2021). For instance, I have noted in my practice that patients are declining the passive recipient role, whereby decisions are made by a health provider, independent of their input. Patients are increasingly demanding to take responsibility for all aspects of care. Thus, as a nurse leader, I will promote self-care by working towards empowering patients to make decisions and do things for themselves unless it is impossible.
