Discussion Questions
Question 1
My project involves managing students with asthma in the school setting. Asthma is a chronic condition whose incidence and prevalence have increased dramatically among children and adults worldwide (Dharmage, 2019). Thus, my project focuses on educating the students about various asthma triggers, red flags, and avoiding flares. Particularly, I help the students diagnosed with asthma understand asthma triggers in the school environment where they spend most of their time. Additionally, the project aims to inform asthmatic students about the measures they should take in the event of asthma attacks. Therefore, the project will lower the high incidence of asthma attacks and asthma-related complications among students diagnosed with this condition.

Various stakeholders will be involved in this project to enhance its success. First, the school management will take an active role in this project. The management will provide the list of students diagnosed with asthma in this learning institution. Additionally, the management will schedule training time for all asthma students and provide the required training materials, including a laptop and a projector. Additionally, parents of all asthmatic students will be involved in this project. The students diagnosed with asthma cannot participate in the project without obtaining written consent from their parents. The parents will also ensure that their children are not exposed to asthma triggers while at home, thus reducing the possibility of asthma attacks.
Lastly, I will apply the acquired knowledge regarding the servant approach to power and authority in developing this project. I will utilize my power to force students diagnosed with asthma to attend the training program. Additionally, I will utilize my authority as a school nurse to influence the school management to eliminate all preventable asthma triggers from the school environment.
Question 2
I felt manipulated in several incidents during my professional life. The most memorable situation occurred when I was working under a certified nurse assistant in a healthcare facility. The nurse knew repositioning a patient was a demanding task that required two or more professionals to help each other during the process. Nonetheless, the nurse always excused herself when it was time for the patient to be repositioned. I had to use my knowledge and experience and reposition the patient alone. I thought this incident would occur one, but unfortunately, it was a trend. I felt that the nurse was misusing and manipulating me, but I could not do anything since I was supposed to work under her. Although she was my mentor, I felt that she did not value me at all. I then decided that I would not be repositioning the patient alone, but I would rather engage nurse assistants in this activity. Sometimes the nurse assistants were engaged elsewhere, delaying repositioning the patient, which resulted in pressure ulcers.
The issue of purpose captured in the servant leadership paradigm could have led to more positive outcomes for the leader and myself. Servant leaders are supposed to value the interest of others than theirs. In other words, they should ensure that other people’s needs are met before satisfying theirs. In this perspective, the certified nurse assistant should have ensured that the patient is repositioned before attending to her issues. Doing so would have impacted the leader and me positively. The leader could be viewed as a responsible person who can be trusted for more leadership responsibilities to transform the medical facility. According to Allen et al. (2016), servant leaders provide the required transformational leadership, thus enabling healthcare organizations to achieve the desired change. On the other hand, I could be considered as a competent nurse practitioner who can work under a nurse assistant to provide safe and quality patient care.
