Short and Long-Term Goals as an APRN

[elementor-template id="165244"]

Setting long and short-term goals in nursing practice is essential since it motivates the nurses toward achieving their personal and professional goals. The most important thing to note when setting these goals is the need to incorporate the SMART goals model to ensure that they are specific and measurable and that one can attain them within the set time. As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), I already know that during the transition, I will be more of a novice in the world of nursing practice, thus the need to incorporate all measures to help us transition smoothly. Therefore, the paper will describe my future profession’s short and long and short-term goals.

Future Profession Short-Term Goal

My first goal As an APRN, is how I will access board certification. Therefore, I will need to evaluate various certification requirements and precisely those that our state recommends ensuring that once I complete my education, I will have ample knowledge of the most appropriate license. For example, in our state, the board requires one to have completed their Master’s in Nursing program and have examined an accredited institution like the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Hence, I know that before engaging in any examination, I must first prove that I have qualified by completing my master’s program.

Despite having access to board certification as a nurse, various competencies are essential to make the transition to nursing practice more effective. White and Grason (2019) postulate that nurses must acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses to improve their nursing practice skills. At the moment, my strengths lie in critical clinical reasoning since I can evaluate patient conditions systematically to make the right judgment. Also, I can engage the patients, their families and my nursing colleagues using the appropriate verbal and non-verbal cues, thus enhancing our communication. However, one factor that I still need to work on is my confidence after being introduced to a new clinical environment. I am hopeful that once I begin the practice, my confidence will be raised, and I will meet nursing colleagues who can nurture my skills to be a better APRN.

As an APRN, time management is important since it will help me appropriately balance my personal and professional time. That means I will always make it to work by the indicated time by management and get home on time. In such a case, it will be very easy for me to deal with emergencies since I will always be ready for one. However, one factor that pushes me towards having an appropriate time management schedule is to avoid nursing burnouts and stresses that lead most nurses to develop mental problems like depression, thus making them quit their jobs.

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding are also my considerations since I will manage to assess the treatment provided to the patient and the problem such treatment aims at solving (Schaffer et al., 2021). In such a case, I will need to engage in evidence-based research to identify different diseases and their treatment, including assessing the effectiveness of such medicines. Such knowledge will help me avoid medical instances that are more prevalent in the world and has led to increased mortality rates and hospital stay.

The ability to manage chronic diseases, diagnosis, and treatment will be vital to protecting my patients’ safety and well-being, making it an important goal for my future profession. Hence, I will need to ensure that I acknowledge different diseases’ causes and symptoms and how to diagnose and manage them. This goal is important because APRNs must learn many clinical aspects to ensure that they offer critical clinical reasoning that will enable them to provide the patient population with high-quality, effective and safe care (Schaffer et al., 2019). Therefore, I will need knowledge to prevent risking the patients’ well-being and my practice license.

Future Profession’s Long-Term Goals

Engaging in medical research will be my long-term goal to unearth different contemporary issues that may affect the communities. Moreover, such research skills will be essential since they will increase my competencies and act as an added advantage when seeking for nursing job. That is because most healthcare employers look out for flexible employees who can improve the healthcare standards in such a facility.

I also aim to attain a functional medicine certification as a Nurse practitioner. Such certification will help me provide the patients with individualized therapies to treat various illness causes. Hence, I will ensure that I seek such certification in the Institute of Functional Medicine, where I will be tested and certified.

As part of my future nursing profession, I aim to be a preceptor and educator for incoming students. That means these nursing students will have me as their role model and that I will be modelling their skills using different teaching-learning methods and enhancing their ethical and clinical development (McQueen et al., 2018). Hence, the goal will be made more effective with my engagement with research to ensure that I have up-to-date information concerning nursing practice. Therefore, engaging in preceptorship will be essential since I will help the United States healthcare industry improve training quality.

I will ensure that I am one of the highly competent healthcare providers in my state and country. Therefore, I will ensure that I continue my education to attain a Doctor of Nursing. Therefore, the reason for choosing the goal is to keep aiming high so that one day I will establish my healthcare facility as one of the opportunities aligned with my Doctor of Philosophy as a Nurse Practitioner.

Conclusion

The paper has clearly outlined various short and long-term goals that are more important to my future nursing profession. The short goals include  APRN certification and competencies, time management, ICD /CPT Coding, managing chronic diseases, diagnosis, and treatment. Long-term goals will include engaging in research, functional medicine certification, preceptor and educator for incoming students and being a highly competent health care provider.
