Assignment: Worldview
Assignment: Worldview
A worldview is a collection of values, attitudes, and expectations about the world, which inform a person’s thoughts and actions. Each nurse holds his or her worldview, founded on many factors, including education, work experience, religion, culture, socioeconomic status, and family traditions (Mendes, 2018). The purpose of this paper is to describe my worldview and discuss a nursing theory relating to the worldview and how they can influence my future practice.

Personal Worldview
My worldview with regard to nursing is that it should involve identifying, understanding, and meeting the health needs of any individual in society. I believe that nursing practice should be founded on a constantly evolving body of scientific knowledge. I also believe that nurses should have pride in the nursing profession and seek to constantly improve their knowledge and skills and maintain high ethical standards in all phases of their work. Furthermore, I believe that nurses should demonstrate a caring attitude by being able to express a sense of spiritual love. Besides, the nurse-patient relationship should be marked with loyalty and honesty. Nurses should also be willing to learn from other providers and be resourceful.
[elementor-template id="165244"]Religious teachings of loving others influence my worldview since it is the only way to keep that God-kind of life flowing through me. From the Christian scriptures, I have learned that truly loving a person means caring for them in the manner they need to be cared for, with no strings attached (Krause et al., 2019). This has influenced my worldview of helping each patient to the best of their ability. In my spirituality, I believe that loving and being helpful to others helps one to find meaning and purpose in their life. This has influenced my worldview, as I believe that helping patients meet their needs will enable me find meaning and purpose in my life (Jauncey & Strodl, 2018). Furthermore, my culture emphasizes helping others in society, which has influenced my worldview to help patients in areas they experience challenges.
Nursing Theory
Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory most aligns with my philosophy of practice and approach to patient care. The Need Theory state that the nurse’s unique function is to assist a person, sick or well, in carrying out activities that promote health or recovery that they would conduct without assistance if they had the needed strength, will, or knowledge (Gligor & Domnari, 2020). The nurse should do this in a way as to help the patient to gain independence as fast as possible. The theory emphasizes the importance of increasing a patient’s independence to avoid delayed progress after hospitalization.
The theory is similar to my philosophy of nursing practice, which states that nursing actions should seek to help a patient regain maximum independence in performing activities of daily living (ADLs). I also believe that nurses should help individuals perform preventive activities independently to prevent diseases. Thus, my approach to nursing care involves providing patients with comfort and strategies to promote recovery and ultimate independence. Besides, I provide health education to patients and their families on approaches to prevent diseases, which equips them with the knowledge to empower them to make informed decisions.
The Need Theory influences my nursing care approach since it states that the nurse’s role should be substitutive, supplementary, or complementary to enable the patient to become as independent as possible. Consequently, I assess patients to determine their health needs and their level of independence. Thus, my nursing interventions are directed to assist and support the patient in performing ADLs to their ability and attaining independence. Furthermore, the theory outlines 14 components required for effective nursing care (Gligor & Domnari, 2020). These components provide the framework when conducting a nursing assessment. During the assessment, I seek to identify what the patient can and cannot do in each of these components considering the physical, sociocultural, physiological, environmental, and politico-economic factors influencing the patient. Besides, I discuss with the patient each of these components, identify the patient’s usual routine, and discuss any challenges to fulfilling the usual routine.
Using the Worldview and the Nursing Theory in a Past or Current Practice
In my past organization, a 33-year-old male with a history of schizophrenia was admitted with pneumonia and malnutrition. The patient’s substance abuse history was positive for tobacco smoking 2PPD, excessive alcohol consumption, and marijuana use. He presented with breathing difficulties, productive cough, and rhonchi. His malnutrition was due to inadequate dietary intake secondary to chronic appetite loss. The patient was unkempt, inappropriately dressed, and irritable, with evident mood swings. Besides, he had signs of dehydration like dry skin and mucous membranes, sunken eyes, and dry mouth, and he reported having limited fluid intake. In this case, the worldview and Henderson’s Need theory 14 components would have been used to assess the patient (Lopez et al., 2020). From the assessment, the nurse would have identified the patient’s difficulties in: Breathing normally, Eating and drinking adequately, Keeping the body clean and well-groomed, Selecting appropriate clothes, and Work accomplishment.
The nurse would then make nursing diagnoses based on the identified health needs such as ineffective breathing pattern, Nutritional imbalance less than body requirement, and self-care deficit. In addition, the nurse would plan and implement interventions to help meet the patient’s needs by fully or partially assisting the patient or providing health education (Lopez et al., 2020). In the ineffective breathing pattern, the nurse could have fully assisted the patient by administering oxygen, while in self-care deficit, the nurse could have partially assisted the patient in performing hygiene activities.
How my Worldview and Nursing Theory Will Assist in Developing Future Practice
My worldview will help me develop my future nursing practice since I will seek to improve my knowledge and skills by researching to generate knowledge. It will also drive me to maintain high ethical standards in my practice. Therefore, I will analyze each intervention to ensure it upholds nursing ethics and will promote the greater good. The Need theory will also guide my future practice since I will endeavor to assist patients with essential activities to maintain health, recover, or achieve a peaceful death (Lopez et al., 2020). Besides, I will apply the 14 components needed for effective nursing care. The theory provides a framework that I will use to obtain reliable and valid data about a patients’ health status, which will improve the quality of nursing care I provide to patients.
Conclusion
As a professional nurse, I endeavor to recognize the individual worth of every patient and usually want to help each patient to the very best of their ability. My worldview aligns with Henderson’s Need theory, which proposes that the nurse’s role is to assist individuals with basic activities to maintain health, recover, or achieve a peaceful death. The worldview and Need theory will guide my future practice, particularly in assessing patients and determining interventions to help them achieve independence.
