Discharging Patients

Discharging patients too early from the hospital is always a difficult decision in my practice due to mixed feelings about the issue. This is based on my experience where I have seen multiple patients discharged too early and readmitted too soon. I always feel that if a patient is discharged too early, we probably had a wrong assessment and impression of the underlying medical condition, and we may have provided inadequate treatment interventions to address the main issue.

Additionally, I always feel that early discharges lead to reduced satisfaction with care among patients and families, although they do not always express their dissatisfaction. In my experience, I have encountered patients’ relatives questioning the physician if their patient was provided all the necessary treatment during the short hospital stay (Knutsen Glette et al., 2019). Consequently, I always dread that family members will question the treatment provided, especially for patients admitted in critical condition. Nonetheless, I stand by the principle from relatives that pressure should never influence the medical soundness of decisions.

On the other hand, I usually appreciate early hospitalization since it lowers patients’ risk of contracting hospital-acquired infections. Knutsen Glette et al. (2019) explain that patients who stay too long in the wards are at risk of infections. Besides, discharging patients early increases the number of available hospital beds. It is usually disturbing for nurses when the ward is full, and patients are not being discharged since it denies other more needing patients. Furthermore, I support early discharges since they lower patient and hospital costs. Prolonged hospital stay is associated with high healthcare costs for patients and operational costs for hospitals (Perry et al., 2020). Early discharges also reduce nurses’ workload, making it a plus since it helps lower fatigue and burnout.
