Personal Ethical Philosophy

My personal philosophy dictates the need to engage in activities that will cause no harm to others by ensuring that I treat people appropriately even when no one is watching. The reason for such belief is that the world presents us with unpredictable circumstances where what you do to an individual today may happen to one’s life tomorrow. Hence, my personal philosophy relies on the virtue ethics that help me maintain interpersonal and personal connections, thus creating a favorable environment for all people. Virtue ethics focuses more on individuals than their actions since one’s character defines the outcome expected from their actions (Rachels & Rachels, 2019). For instance, a compassionate person will always ensure they extend their compassion to the rest, thus providing positive results.

Hence, my personal philosophy does not work out when reflecting on John Doe’s case. That is because John is not honest regardless of his situation. The reason is that virtue ethics gives one the wisdom necessary to act right regardless of circumstances. Therefore, from a virtue ethics perspective, John lacks practical wisdom to make the right decision and thus ends up impacting other people negatively, especially the authors and publishers of the books he downloads, considering that most depend on the money to publish more materials for nursing practice. However, to explain John Doe’s perspective, he uses the veil of ignorance which projects that since other people also have the app to download the book, he cannot watch himself fail in class, yet there is a way out (Huang et al., 2019). As a result, John ignores his religious status to ensure that he succeeds in his study like the rest that may have an opportunity to access the book

• Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)
Introduction
Some people believe that you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one is looking. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe is going to take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak” as in cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that other people who are of a lower socio-economic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from using this application to download in this manner. John Doe is focused on his own economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.
