Mental Health – Role Of Developmental Stages Across The Lifespan
[elementor-template id="165244"]Developmental stages across the lifespan including infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and old age. The stages play a role in addressing human development across the lifespan, from birth through death. They contribute to a wealth of value for personal and professional growth and understanding (Chung, 2018). Besides, they help us better understand an individual’s life experiences, which help us understand what childhood events shaped our adulthood (Chung, 2018). Developmental stages enable us to understand and contextualize the ups and downs of life, which helps psychologists and therapists better help clients in self-discovery.
Mental health screening tools are online and paper resources designed to help practitioners quickly determine if a patient has symptoms of a mental disorder. They can assist the NP in obtaining a complete and organized psychosocial and mental health history (Hollier, 2021). Besides, they can help the NP assess a patient’s general behavior and development. Screening tools also provide information on an individual’s functioning in multiple domains, which alerts the NP of a potential mental health condition (Hollier, 2021). They can help the NP assess a wide range of emotional and behavioral symptoms, especially in children and adolescents. This enables the NP to obtain a general sense of a child or adolescent’s mental health wellbeing and areas of distress.
The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is an example of a mental health screening tool. It is a multipurpose tool for screening, diagnosing, monitoring, and assessing the severity of depression (Wood & Gupta, 2017). The tool should be implemented if a patient presents with symptoms suggesting depression such as depressed mood, lack of interest, sleeping difficulties, appetite disturbances, fatigue, concentration difficulties, and suicidal or homicidal ideations (Wood & Gupta, 2017). The PHQ-9 can be used in a case where a patient reports feeling down and hopeless, having little interest in most activities, little energy levels, feeling bad about themselves, and having thoughts that they would be better off dead or of hurting themselves. The PHQ-9 would help determine if the patient has a depressive episode and rate the severity of the depression.
