Most healthcare disciplines require its student o engage in clinical practices as part of their future career preparation. The direct interaction in a working environment offers the students a real environment away from the theoretical instructions. In such a case, the students can interact face-to-face with patients, their families, and other health professionals and staff during their professional practice. Hence, in my current practicum, I have been placed at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene school health division as a nursing supervisor, where I have been in the last two weeks. Initially, I had previously done a lot of research concerning the roles of nurse supervisors. Hence, when I was assigned the role of an acting nurse supervisor, I had a chance to practice the theoretical knowledge in an ideal space. Generally, dealing with mental issues was my main focus since it requires keen observation on both the students and the staff since both parties can be prone to it. For instance, the working conditions can be unfavorable for the staff, and they end up translating their frustration to the students. On the other hand, the students within the Institution can develop mental-related issues from external and internal factors, thus affecting their performance and interaction with other peers and school staff. In such a case, I have been ensuring that I observe each party closely with the help of other professionals to ensure that they receive maximum care. My interaction with the school principal has created an excellent opportunity to discuss how medical rooms should be equipped to help address issues on health and mental issues in the Institution. Such interaction is essential since the principal might not have adequate information on how each department should perform, thus making it the duty of healthcare professionals to inform them of their department requirements. Another factor that I considered within the two weeks was holding a meeting with the staff. I ensured that we discussed what the Institution expects from them, especially on their attendance. Such meetings are also essential to ensure that the staff members express their strengths, weaknesses, skills, and competencies. That way, it becomes easier to collaborate with each member within the department for better departmental outcomes in dealing with health and mental issues.

Leadership Application

Every workplace should enhance how it handles the organizational member’s health and mental issues adequately to prevent experiencing adverse effects. According to Cox (2019), nurse supervisors should establish respect, confidence, trust and accessible leadership to the people that one manages.  Generally, trust is one of the many factors determining how people within a workplace environment interact with their leaders. In such a case, my main role in the NYC Department is to ensure that health professionals address the students’ overall health and mental issues. Therefore, within the two weeks that I have been in NYC Department, I have been encouraging the healthcare professionals always to ensure that they apply evidence-based treatments for all treatments. Considering that I want to provide a healthy working environment, I have been employing more transformational leadership, which falls under leadership relationship theory and encourages effective interaction among people in an organization. That can be proved by my interaction with the institution principal and the staff to achieve quality patient care.

Practicum Project Preparation

As indicated earlier, I have been indulging in comprehensive research on the significant roles dictated to nurse supervisors. In that regard, I realized that for one to be a successful nurse supervisor, they require prior knowledge on how to handle different professionals within a given healthcare facility. For instance, Cox (2019) accentuates that the organization increases their chance to provide effective treatments and patients experience outcomes through interprofessional collaboration. Therefore, as I work in the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene school health division, I ensure that each team collaborates towards achieving the best experiences and outcomes for our students. Hence, through the regular meeting with the staff and school principal, we have been brainstorming ways to minimize health and mental issues like depression to the students and the team. Hence, it has been an easy task for me in emulating the characteristics of a transformational leader, such as listening to all people and making critical decisions.

Leadership Video Reflection

In his video, Darryl DelHousaye points out a crucial point concerning how leaders should utilize their powers in addressing the employees for productivity and performance. For instance, as Darryl elaborates more on effective leadership, he points out that leaders should influence the employees using dynamic art (GCU Academics – Nursing, 2016, 4.36 -5.38). That means, as a leader, I should act the same way I need my employees to perform since, in most cases, employees copy the characteristics of their leader. Hence, considering that the NYC Department of Health in the school health division is diverse, I will need to show all staff how to embrace diversity by respecting each other’s beliefs and culture. The knowledge from the video is also essential since it present knowledge useful in my future career in nursing.

Conclusion

The paper describes the activities I have been involved in during my practicum placement at the NYC Department of Health in the school health division. In that regard, the main discussion has been on the reflection on practicum activities, leadership application,  practicum project preparation and a reflection of the leadership video.
