Assignment: Interpersonal Process Analysis

Last month, a patient suffering from major depressive illness mainly characterized by excessive consumption of alcohol, asthma, hyperthyroidism visited the hospital where I was working as a clinical nurse. The patient’s environmental and psychological issues included lack of economic access to healthcare and challenges with a primary support group (Jones, Latchford, & Tober, 2016). The main reason why the patient was hospitalized was that they wanted to take his own life. Current stressors leading to his illness condition were withdrawal symptoms, fatigue, depression, severe headache, restlessness, and optical chills.

The main goal of evaluating the patient was to develop personal empathy with him and gain trust. This was to enable the patient to open up his emotions and adequately describe the stressing condition.  Moreover, I intended to allow the patient to cope and improve his moods. After the examination the patient I realized that the patient becomes free from suicidal thoughts and feelings, developed positivity and indicated consistency of commitment of being sober (Jones, Latchford & Tober, 2016).

At first, my communication with the patient was challenging. It took some time for both of us to develop eye to eye contact. However, when I decided to ask him about his interests and hobbies, the patient began to be receptive and talked about his childhood and the experiences he had with his father who rendered him to develop a major depressive disorder (Jones, Latchford & Tober, 2016). Although narrating about these experiences upsets him, he stated that he began using drugs and alcohol at an early age as a way of relieving his mind due to family-related conflicts with his father.

From experience I gained with the patient, I realized the significance of developing personal trust with patients to analyze, evaluate and make appropriate care and provide patients with the right interventions and education. It would instead complement patients feeling during their stay at the hospital and also after discharge.
