Procalcitonin.

Procalcitonin is a peptide precursor of calcitonin a hormone whose major function in the body is to regulate calcium and phosphate levels. Procalcitonin (PCT) plays a major role in the management of patients with sepsis. It is usually used as an early marker of sepsis prompting early initiation of treatment. It is also used in differentiating sepsis caused by bacteria and other causes of Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) as it is more sensitive to bacterial toxins as compared to other biomarkers. PCT is also used as a guide in antibiotic therapy for critically ill patients .This biomarker is usually used in combination with other biomarkers such as C reactive proteins(CRP) to guide the attending physician on when to discontinue antibiotic therapy in critically ill patients(Azzini et al., 2020). This in turn leads to reduced antibiotic exposure, reduced cases of resistance to antibiotics and finally reduces mortality rates.

PCT levels are also used to make a prognosis for patients with sepsis. Reducing levels of procalcitonin in comparison to levels recorded when a patient was initiated on treatment is an indication that a patient is responding well to treatment. Thus PCT can be used to make decisions on further diagnostic work ups , pursuing further treatment modalities and even timing of a patients discharge from a health facility(Schuetz et al., 2019). It can also be used as one of the criteria of weaning a patient off mechanical ventilation on time thus reducing the period of intubation which has been linked to a good prognosis and reducing the patients stay in the hospital.
