Chapter One
The video selected is that of Khan Academy Medicine (2015), which elaborates on the various defense mechanisms. One of the most exciting defense mechanisms is the neurotic defense mechanism. It exists in various categories, including intellectualization, where once an individual picks up a situation, they tend to detach it from any emotional aspect, thus reducing anxiety levels. Intellectualization is an interesting section because it can easily help make informed decisions and unbiased judgments, unlike when one involves emotions when making decisions and judgments. Such a technique is essential in practice since it will always help provide patient-centric services to all the patients regardless of their background to improve their overall well-being. Consequently, the intellectualization technique is essential when engaging with other healthcare providers since it will help solve issues based on our professional practice rather than basing such issues on a personal level for cohesiveness.

From Ms. Sak’s case, it is evident that schizophrenia becomes more advanced as the patients stay for long without treatment since it puts individuals at risk of developing other mental health disorders like delusions, disorganized speech, hallucinations, and abnormal motor behaviors. Therefore, Ms. Sak’s case proves that lack of treatment and intervention in the early stages of schizophrenia can lead to the symptoms being more advanced, thus negatively affecting the patient mentally and socially. Hence, it is the role of the nurses and caregivers to ensure that once the patients have been prescribed any medication to follow up to ensure that they curb the adverse psychosis episodes (TED, 2012). Also, instead of stigmatizing people with schizophrenia, society should create a better environment to support the patients. Also, it is essential to create awareness concerning schizophrenia and other mental illness, including those in prison, to save their lives and those living close to them. Hence, the local, state, and national governments should work closely with healthcare providers to find effective ways to curb mental illnesses and create policies toward the same effect (Van-Os et al., 2022).
