School Health Nurse in District Schools

School nurses are essential to all schools since they offer critical services that align with school health programs, especially in addressing the main health issues that students experience.  According to Doi et al. (2018), school health nurses’ roles include health education, screening and preventative service, making informed decisions concerning students’ health, and managing the students’ health conditions such as immunization.  Therefore, the district school in our area has taken seriously the issue of involving a school health nurse to ensure that the students in these schools receive quality healthcare services.

In such a case, most of the nurses in district schools ensure that they consider factors like physical and mental issues that most likely affect the young students. Therefore, these school presents the students with healthy learning environment since whenever a health issue arises, they know that they can approach a school health nurse. For instance, if the children face issues such as abuse, the situation can affect their overall well-being, thus affecting their social and academic progress. Hence, the school health nurse can work closely with the student to identify the root cause of the problem to be in a position to strategize on the most effective way to solve the issue.

Managing Heath Issues and Promoting Health

Children tend to discover new things that might alter their behaviours, such as sexual behaviours and substance abuse. Hence, in our area, schools have been using the teachers and the students’ parents to manage arising health issues and promote health with the help of the school nurses (Doi et al., 2019).  The parents promote health and manage health issues by encouraging their students to practice positive behaviours. In such a case, the parents compliment the students as they learn, thus preventing school dropouts or engaging in illicit behaviours. Through their respective school health programs, the teachers enlighten the students on the common health issues among students, such as sexually transmitted infections. It becomes easier for the students to put boundaries with their opposite genders, thus maintaining a healthy academic relationship. Additionally, the school nurses are also essential in promoting health and managing health issues among the students through meeting up with the students’ parents and designing the most effective strategies in addressing the students’ needs.

Conclusion

The discussion assesses the effectiveness of school health nurses in addressing issues facing the students. However, it is also evident that the school health nurses require collaboration from the teachers and the students’ parents to manage the students’ health issues and promote health.

Overview
The role of the school health nurse is unique, not only as compared to other nursing roles but within itself.
Understanding the overall goals of a school health program will allow the school health nurse to function in an effective way to foster healthy school communities. Health promotion in the school setting can have long lasting impact on students. Recognition of existing health problems in the school setting will allow the nurse to plan and intervene for optimal health restoration within the school population.
Educating pre-teens and teens in a straightforward manner about normative changes, sexuality, and STDs is an important way to avoid future issues.
