A complete neurological assessment includes an assessment of mental status, cranial nerves, cerebellar functioning, sensory test, reflexes, and gait and muscle strength (Crupi et al., 2020). A 32-year-old male patient was brought to the ED by paramedics after he was knocked by a ball on the head during a soccer match. A head injury was suspected, but the severity was unknown. When examining the patient, I realized that his level of consciousness was decreasing. This was based on findings of slowing of speech, delay in responding to questions, restlessness, confusion, and pupillary changes like dilation with slowed constriction. In addition, the patient had some degree of weakness in one limb and reported having a headache that was increasing in severity, especially with movement. Furthermore, I assessed the level of consciousness using the Glasgow Coma Scale, and the patient scored 13.

           Difficulties may arise in diagnosing a patient with sports-related concussion and identifying if a patient has a serious brain injury like a hematoma or contusion. Clinicians need to know when to have neuroimaging, like a CT scan in a patient with a concussion. A head CT scan should be performed if the patient has loss of consciousness,

Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) < 15, a focal neurologic deficit, persistently altered mental status, and other signs of deterioration (McKeithan et al., 2019). Difficulties in diagnosing concussion and head injury can be mitigated by taking a thorough history of trauma that includes the time, cause, direction, and force of the blow, as well as loss of consciousness and duration after the blow.

The Christian worldview and compassion for all play a role in this assessment since health providers should demonstrate compassion to patients with neurological and psychological symptoms. Since the ability of most patients to perform ADLs is limited, the nurse should show compassion by assisting them in carrying out these tasks until the patient gains the ability.
