After reviewing the readings and the above article, please discuss the increased need for telehealth education competencies for nurse practitioners, and the impact on nursing administrators/executives or curriculum and educators in nursing education. COVID has changed the way telehealth is viewed forever. Are newly licensed NPs prepared for telehealth? Are universities preparing them based on current curriculum? “Telehealth is a growing part of the healthcare field. It uses technology to communicate with patients that are not physically present with the healthcare worker (Sewell, 2019). Although telehealth is not a new concept, its use increased over the last few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even with the expanded use of telehealth, many new nurse practitioners are not ready to fully engage in it for patient treatment (Arends et al., 2019). Healthcare providers mainly used telehealth to overcome the massive obstacle of providing treatment during the pandemic. I believe that in an effort for society to return to what was once our “norm,” providers are slowly returning to in-person visits versus audio and visual.
Universities are preparing upcoming nurse practitioners for the use of telehealth; however, the degree of the preparation may not mimic the level of progression and advancement of telemedicine over the last several years. While learning the basics of the concept is vital, the vast majority of the time should be used in hands-on treatment. Nurse practitioners, students, or other professionals that desire more in-depth training on treating patients solely through technology have resources available to guide them through the process. According to Arends et al. (2019), online learning programs were developed to aid future nurse practitioners in becoming more comfortable with treating patients through virtual measures.
There is a need for new and seasoned nurse practitioners to obtain the knowledge and understanding of utilizing telehealth. Beyond the effects of the pandemic, technology allows individuals that would otherwise not seek care to have access to medical advice. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2022), patients in rural populations have less access to healthcare and lower participation rates in self-management. As a resident of a rural area, telehealth has numerous benefits for the community.”
