The two most crucial healthcare issues in my community are low rates of flu vaccination and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases. According to Kaiser Family Foundation, only 46.5% of Georgians got the flu vaccine in 2022, making Georgia among the lowest in the US. Georgia is ranked 48th across the US in vaccinations, ahead of only Oklahoma, Florida, and Mississippi. The issue of flu vaccination is important since immunization against influenza is an ideal low-cost, safe, and effective way to reduce morbidity and mortality related to influenza (Brewer et al., 2021). Influenza immunization is a highly effective strategy for reducing illness, hospitalization, and mortality from the disease.
Chronic diseases are an important health issue in the community. This is because chronic illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S. Besides, they are the leading drivers of the country’s $4.1 trillion in annual healthcare costs (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2018). Most chronic diseases are caused by risky behaviors like tobacco use, poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use.
The low flu vaccination rate among Georgians can be attributed to a lack of vaccine literacy and the belief of having a lower susceptibility to flu and its consequences. Thus, the issue can be addressed by healthcare providers and the government working together to improve flu vaccine literacy among residents. This will significantly decrease negative perceptions toward vaccination (Shon & Lee, 2023). Educational programs and official communication channels can be used to address vaccination concerns and provide accurate information about Flu vaccines to increase vaccination rates and protect public health.
The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases in Georgia can be addressed by providing self-management education. This can empower Georgians to prevent and control chronic diseases across the population and lifespan. The education should also include informing Georgia communities about the opportunities to promote good health including living healthy lifestyles and getting help for alcohol and smoking cessation (Cook et al., 2018).
