Pertinent anatomy: The clinician should be well-versed with the anatomy of the chest cavity including the chest wall, pleural cavities, intercostal muscles, intercostal space, and the nerve, artery and vein that run through the intercostal space (Wiegand, 2017).
Indications: ·         Pneumothorax.

·         Hemothorax.

·         Hemopneumothorax.

·         Tension pneumothorax.

·         Thoracotomy like patients on open heart surgery and pneumonectomy (Wiegand, 2017).

·         Pyothorax or empyema.

·         Chylothorax.

·         Cholothorax.

·         Hydrothorax.

·         Pleural effusion (Wiegand, 2017).

Contraindications/ Special considerations:

 

 

·         Patients requiring an emergency thoracotomy (Wiegand, 2017).

·         Pulmonary bullae.

·         Coagulopathy.

·         Pulmonary, pleural, or thoracic adhesions.

·         Pulmonary abscess.

·         Loculated pleural effusion or empyema.

·         Skin infection at the chest-tube insertion site (Wiegand, 2017).

 

Complications: ·         Failure of the lung to fully re-expand (Wiegand, 2017).

·         Infection.

·         Blocked chest tube.

·         Cardiac dysrhythmia.

·         Persistent pneumothorax.

·         Leak around the chest tube (Wiegand, 2017).
