Nurses encounter the daily impact of policy and politics within the healthcare sector. Nurses, as the most populous cohort within the worldwide healthcare profession, possess a unique vantage point from which to observe the effects of health policy on individuals and communities (Wilson et al., 2020). Nurses can advocate for transformative measures within their professional settings, nursing associations, governmental bodies and via direct engagement with policymakers and elected representatives. As an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, there are several avenues via which I might enhance my engagement in healthcare policymaking to bolster patient advocacy. In order to effectively influence policy, it is imperative to obtain distinct educational and experiential qualifications. This includes acquiring knowledge on the process of policy formulation, identifying key policy-makers within one’s workplace and community, examining the salient health policies that hold personal significance, investigating the legislative support for policies of interest, engaging in correspondence with legislators regarding matters impacting patient care, disseminating information to colleagues regarding avenues for effecting policy change, and ultimately affiliating with organizations that advocate for the interests of patients or nurses (Rasheed et al., 2020).
Developing a connection is considered one of the most effective methods for influencing an individual’s cognitive processes. Hajizadeh et al. (2021) suggest that nurses should actively establish connections with legislators involved in developing healthcare legislation. As a result, those who have gained practical experience within a nursing organization or have engaged in collaborative efforts with lawmakers may potentially get appointments or invitations to contribute to a national board responsible for shaping healthcare policy. Furthermore, nurses have the potential to enhance their engagement in the policymaking process via their endorsement of a candidate at the local level (Scott & Scott, 2020). During the pre-election period, nurses can support a local candidate whose perspectives closely correspond with their own. The level of engagement shown by nurses may determine the extent to which they may establish a rapport with political candidates, enabling them to influence the candidates’ ideologies and convictions after their election.
