Various individuals argue that ethics is basic competence in healthcare. I completely agree with this statement since ethics affects every aspect of health care, including direct care of clients, finances allocation, and staff utilization. Ethics deal with the responsibilities of health care providers, human behavior, and what individuals do under various circumstances (Hemberg & Hemberg, 2020). Various factors make ethics a basic competence in healthcare, including the increasingly technological society and the changing fabric of our society. Besides, patients are becoming more knowledgeable of their rights, making providers more liable for ethical implications (Hemberg & Hemberg, 2020). Furthermore, the proportion of resources allocated for health requires providers to have ethics in order to ensure the individuals requiring these resources can access them.

Healthcare providers need ethics to make ethical decisions that reflect what is best for the patient and society. Besides, providers need competency in ethics due to the frequent ethical dilemmas in clinical practice. Providers often encounter situations where there is a conflict between two or more ethical principles with conflicting requirements in that there is no right or wrong option (Koskenvuori et al., 2018). When an ethical dilemma occurs, the healthcare provider must make an ethical choice between two equally unsatisfactory alternatives.

The ethical dilemmas that providers encounter in practice include DNR, which means that DNR neither basic nor advanced CPR should be performed on a patient. Ethical dilemmas in DNR decisions occur in various circumstances including: when there is a disagreement in the health team on whether a patient should have a DNR order; when the patient and relatives think differently about DNR; when a decision of whether or not to execute a DNR order stands between patient autonomy and the medical prognosis (Pettersson et al., 2018). Therefore, providers must understand the concept of ethical competence to make or participate in DNR decisions. Ethics is a basic competence in DNR decisions since it enables providers to apply ethical reasoning by thinking through what one ought to do in an orderly, systematic approach to justify actions based on principles (Koskenvuori et al., 2018). Furthermore, having ethical skills will enable providers to make DNR decisions that are not based entirely on intuition or emotions but based on values, norms, and patients’ interests.
