Discussion 2
My former healthcare organization had a democratic leadership design. The leaders maintained less control over the employees and directed them using suggestions and guidance. Besides, participative decision-making was used, involving employees at every hierarchy level. The leaders used ego awards to motivate since the leadership design was based on the assumption that employees were motivated by internal forces and drives, desired active participation in decision-making, and wanted to get the tasks done. Therefore, leaders in the organization used their positional power and employed cooperative decision strategies to draw out ideas from employees concerning the organization. The leadership created a healthy working environment for all employees, which was crucial in promoting creativity, strengthening interprofessional collaboration in patient care, improving job satisfaction, and retaining staff.
Nevertheless, the leadership design occasionally created negative emotions among some employees, especially when their opinions and perspectives were not considered in decision-making. The APN leader can improve this issue by communicating to the employees that the manager will make the final decision after weighing the employees’ opinions and determining the most applicable one (Lamb et al., 2018). Furthermore, the APN can promote constructive criticism to encourage employees to continuously improve their clinical practice leading to better patient outcomes (Lamb et al., 2018). The APN can improve communication to promote an upward and downward flow in the organization. This can encourage employees to express their opinions and promptly inform the leaders of issues in the organization for fast response.
The interdisciplinary team members who can contribute to the resolution of the issue include healthcare leaders, nurses, physicians, and clinical pharmacists. The different professionals can identify an approach that they can use to give opinions in their departments and come up with a common solution. Healthcare technology like the electronic health record (EHR) can address communication gaps in an organization (Vos et al., 2020). The EHR creates a channel for providers to communicate and come up with one solution to address a patient’s healthcare needs.
