Leadership Theories and Behaviors
The healthcare sector is among the most complicated industries. Therefore, leaders need skills and competencies to manage their team members for better outcomes effectively. Leaders should know that the selected theory greatly influences their subordinates and the entire organization.
Key Insights on Leadership
The selected scholarly resources had two key insights, including the leader’s significance in driving an organization to the desired level and leaders skills, influence, knowledge, and experience required to motivate the workers to towards the right direction (Duggan et al., 2015). The field of nursing is complicated and changing very fast. Therefore, competent leaders are required to guide nurse practitioners in their clinical practices. Transformational leaders require basic knowledge of various leadership theories in a healthcare setting. However, the type of leadership theory to be adopted depends on the current situation (Marshall & Broome, 2017). This does not mean that leaders should ignore understanding other theories since they are also important.
A situation where these behaviors and skills were used in practice
I experienced a nurse leader utilize Theory Y in leading nurses in a clinic. According to Prottas (2018), theory Y leaders consider their employees as honest, hardworking, able, and committed towards their duties in the organization. The nurse leader trusted the employees to perform their duties with minimal supervision. For instance, the leader believed that nurses would take care of patients even without being supervised. These leadership skills were effective in enhancing the duty performance of the nurses. They were self-directed towards their duties and did the right thing even without being supervised by their leader. This practice impacted the workplace by improving clinical outcomes.
