Significance of Understanding Multiple Intelligences

            Understanding multiple intelligences accrues a wide range of benefits to healthcare practitioners. First, these intelligences enable a nurse practitioner (NP) to understand the dynamics of novice nurses. An NP utilizes this diversity while educating novice nurses to enhance their understanding. A novice nurse understands easily if an NP considers his or her strengths and focuses on them during training. Understanding this intelligence enhanced my knowledge about variation in strengths among novice nurses when working in the mental health clinic. I guided and nurtured these nurses depending on their strengths, enabling them to provide quality and safe patient care efficiently. For instance, I showed a novice nurse who demonstrated logical-mathematical intelligence on managing and performing information programming associated with financial issues in the clinic.

Additionally, understanding multiple intelligences enables nurses to assess novice nurses’ learning through various means based on intelligence demonstrated. I applied multiple intelligence to evaluate the qualification and capacity of novice nurses when I was working in the mental health clinic. For instance, I assessed the self-judgment of a novice nurse who demonstrated interpersonal intelligence.

Types of Intelligences

            Gardner discussed several types of intelligence, such as logical-mathematical intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, spatial intelligence, and interpersonal intelligence.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence involves using a wide range of reasoning skills with a preference for deductive and inductive reasoning and factual data (Rubenfeld & Scheffer, 2015).

Intrapersonal Intelligence involves self-awareness to internalize learning by converting information into meaning and thought connection.

Interpersonal Intelligence: It uses communication accompanied with punctuations and intonations to enhance empathy, understanding, and learning from others.

Spatial Intelligence: It is considered as the mind’s eye. It involves thinking in pictures and images to visualize something abstractly and accurately (Rubenfeld & Scheffer, 2015).

Relationship between these Intelligences and My Thinking

First, logical-mathematical intelligence relates to my thinking. This intelligence involves logical thinking with a preference for numerical patterns. Therefore, it relates to my conceptual and abstract thinking. For instance, I applied logical-mathematical intelligence during the delivery of mental health care to calculate unit budgets and medication dosages. Additionally, intrapersonal intelligence relates to my thinking. This intelligence involves self-awareness to internalize learning, which is evident in my thinking. For example, this intelligence enabled me to judge myself well when working in the mental health clinic. Consequently, I understood patients presented with various mental disorders and responded to their care needs.

Impact of using Multiple Intelligences in Mentoring Novice Nurses

The use of multiple intelligence in mentoring novice nurses is associated with positive effects. First, the use of multiple intelligence in mentoring novice nurses enables a practitioner to mentor more novice nurses effectively using different modalities based on one’s interest and preference (Jimenez, 2018). These nurses become competent and more productive since mentoring focuses on the most dominant learning intelligence. For example, a practitioner-focused on logical-mathematical intelligence modality upon noticing that a novice nurse working in a mental health clinic preferred numerical patterns. The novice nurse became more productive and efficient in preparing monthly budgets for the clinic. Secondly, the use of multiple intelligence in mentoring novice nurses enables them to cope with the diversity in real work-life situations due to the differentiation of intelligence into various modalities. For example, using the intrapersonal intelligence modality to mentor a novice nurse enhanced her self-awareness, thereby enabling her to cope with the diversity in real work-life situations.

Improving the Mentoring Process using the Concepts of Multiple Intelligences

            The use of multiple intelligences in mentoring novice nurses can be improved through enhancing understanding of diversity in real work-life situations. Therefore, understanding diversity in real work-life cases will enable practitioners to use the most appropriate intelligence modality to mentor nurses to make them more productive and efficient during care delivery. Additionally, mentoring novice nurses can be improved by educating healthcare professionals about multiple intelligences modalities that can be used during the mentorship. Healthcare providers can use various modalities in mentoring novice nurses (Parvari et al., 2017). Therefore, they will use the most appropriate multiple intelligence modalities to improve the productivity and efficiency of a novice nurse in his or her clinical practices.
