Topic 5 DQ 2: Describe Advocacy Strategies
As a nurse leader, I can use a variety of advocacy strategies to create positive change in the current workplace. One strategy is to build strong relationships with other members of the healthcare team, including doctors, administrators, and other nurses. By developing a strong network of allies, nurse leaders can leverage the support of their colleagues to advocate for changes that benefit patients and the nursing staff (Turale & Kunaviktikul, 2019).
Another strategy is to use data and evidence to support their advocacy efforts. As a nurse leader, I can collect data on patient outcomes, staff satisfaction, and other key indicators to demonstrate the need for change and to support their arguments for specific changes (Gotterson et al., 2021). By using data and evidence, nurse leaders can make a compelling case for changes that will improve the quality of care and the working conditions for nurses.
As a nurse leader, I can also use the power of storytelling to advocate for change. By sharing real-life examples of how current practices are impacting patients and nurses, nurse leaders can build support for changes that will improve care and working conditions. Another strategy is to be a role model for other nurses. By demonstrating a commitment to advocating for change and leading by example, nurse leaders can inspire other nurses to speak up and advocate for change in their own workplaces (Sensmeier et al., 2019). Finally, I can use my professional organizations to advocate for change. Many professional nursing organizations have advocacy initiatives that nurse leaders can participate in, such as lobbying for changes in healthcare policy or advocating for better working conditions for nurses.
In summary, nurse leaders can use a variety of advocacy strategies to create positive change in their current workplace, including building strong relationships with other members of the healthcare team, using data and evidence to support their arguments, using storytelling to build support for change, being a role model for other nurses and utilizing professional organizations to advocate for change.
